A clinic interior has a harder brief than most commercial spaces. It must be hygienic and easy to disinfect, calm for anxious patients, efficient for the doctor and staff, accessible for elderly and disabled patients, and suitable for medical equipment with its own power, plumbing and safety needs.
Bangalore has a large number of small and mid-size clinics in residential areas such as Sarjapur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Whitefield and Hebbal, often in ground-floor shops or converted homes. Here is how to plan a clinic interior, with layouts, materials and costs.
Plan the patient journey
Map the route a patient takes: entrance, reception, waiting, consultation, any procedure or diagnostic room, billing and exit. A good layout keeps this route short, clear and one-directional where possible, so patients coming out do not cross those waiting to go in.
Keep staff routes separate from patient routes where space allows, especially between the consultation rooms, the procedure room and the storage or sterilisation area.
Reception and waiting
The reception desk should be visible from the entrance, with a lower section at about 30 inches high for wheelchair users and children.
Allow about 10 to 15 sq ft per seat in the waiting area. Mix seating, with some chairs with arms for elderly patients to push themselves up, and a corner for children in paediatric clinics.
Use warm light, plants or a calm feature wall to reduce anxiety. A screen for queue updates or health information helps patients know how long they will wait.
Consultation and procedure rooms
A consultation room usually needs about 100 to 120 sq ft for a desk, two patient chairs, an examination couch and a hand-washing basin.
Procedure rooms need more space around the bed or chair, at least 3 feet on each working side, plus storage for consumables and equipment.
Dental clinics need room around each dental chair, with plumbing, suction and compressed air lines under the floor or in a service channel, and a separate sterilisation area.
Hygienic materials
Use joint-free, non-porous surfaces that are easy to disinfect. Vinyl flooring with welded joints and coved skirting, where the floor curves up the wall, is the standard in clinical areas because dirt cannot collect in corners.
Choose antibacterial or high-pressure laminates, solid surface or quartz counters, and washable paint on walls.
Avoid fabric upholstery in clinical areas; use wipeable vinyl or PU leather.
Place hand-washing basins with elbow or sensor taps in every consultation and procedure room.
Lighting
Use neutral to cool white light of about 4000K to 5000K with high colour rendering in examination areas, so doctors see skin tones and colours accurately. Dental and dermatology clinics need specialised task lighting.
Use warmer light in the waiting area to make it feel calmer.
Accessibility
Provide a step-free entrance or a ramp with a gentle slope and handrails, doors at least 3 feet wide, and an accessible toilet if space allows. Many patients are elderly, injured or with young children.

Services and compliance
Medical equipment needs reliable power. Plan dedicated circuits, earthing and UPS for sensitive equipment, and check the sanctioned electrical load early.
Clinics generate biomedical waste, which must be segregated, stored safely and handed to an authorised agency. Plan a small, ventilated storage space for it.
Depending on the specialty, clinics may need registration with the state authorities and pollution control board authorisation for biomedical waste. X-ray and imaging rooms need radiation shielding and separate approvals. Check the requirements for your specialty before designing.
Clinics in residential buildings and converted homes
Many neighbourhood clinics in Bangalore open in ground-floor spaces of residential buildings or converted independent houses. These often have small rooms, steps at the entrance and limited electrical capacity.
Check early that the building and the zoning allow a clinic, that a ramp can be built at the entrance, and that the electrical load can be increased for equipment and air conditioning. Removing internal walls to create a waiting area needs a structural check.
Converted homes have one advantage: windows in most rooms. Use them for natural light and ventilation in waiting and consultation areas, with frosted film for privacy.
Infection control in the layout
Separate clean and dirty routes where you can: clean instruments and supplies move one way, used instruments and waste move another. In dental clinics, the sterilisation area should have a clear dirty side (receiving and washing) and clean side (sterilising and storage).
Keep surfaces in clinical rooms minimal. Every open shelf and decorative object is something that must be cleaned between patients.
Privacy
Patients need privacy during consultations. Use solid partitions with acoustic insulation between consultation rooms, solid doors and, where glass is used, frosted film.
Place the reception desk so conversations about symptoms are not overheard by the whole waiting room.
Mistakes to avoid
Choosing finishes for looks over cleaning is the most common. Grooved panels, open shelves and fabric chairs in a consultation room are hard to disinfect.
Placing the only toilet off the waiting room without a basin outside it is the second. Patients and staff need to wash hands without walking through the clinic.
Underestimating storage is the third. Consumables, files and equipment pile up in corners and passages when there is nowhere to put them.
What a clinic interior costs in Bangalore
In 2026, clinic interiors in Bangalore typically cost Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,600 per sq ft, including flooring, partitions, ceilings, lighting, electrical, plumbing, reception and fixed furniture. Dental clinics and clinics with procedure rooms sit at the higher end because of plumbing, air lines and specialised lighting.
A 600 to 800 sq ft clinic with reception, waiting, two consultation rooms and a small procedure room usually costs Rs 9 lakh to Rs 20 lakh for the interior. Medical equipment is separate.
