Most kitchen renovations in Bangalore start with one complaint. The shutters under the sink have swollen, the granite has a crack across the hob cut-out, or the wall behind the stove has turned yellow and no amount of scrubbing helps. Then the question becomes how much to change.
That decision drives the cost more than anything else. A kitchen refresh that keeps the layout, the plumbing and the tiles can cost under Rs 1 lakh. A full renovation that strips the room back to the walls and starts again costs Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for a typical apartment kitchen.
Here is how the three common scopes compare, what each line item costs in 2026, and how to tell which one your kitchen needs.
The three renovation scopes
A refresh keeps the existing cabinets and layout. It replaces the shutters, the handles and sometimes the hinges, adds a few accessories, and may change the counter. For a 10 to 12-foot kitchen this costs Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh. It works when the carcasses are sound, which you can check by opening the sink unit and pressing the base panel. If it is soft, flaking or smells damp, a refresh will only hide the problem.
A cabinet replacement removes the old cabinets and installs a new modular kitchen in the same layout, keeping the plumbing, the gas point and the wall tiles where possible. This costs Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 3.8 lakh for most 2 and 3 BHK kitchens, depending mostly on the shutter finish.
A full renovation strips the kitchen to the walls and floor. It covers new plumbing and drainage, new electrical points and wiring, waterproofing at the sink wall, new wall and floor tiles, and a new modular kitchen, sometimes with a changed layout. Expect Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for an apartment kitchen, and more for a large kitchen in an independent house.
Line-by-line costs for a 10 to 12-foot kitchen
Demolition and debris removal: Rs 8,000 to Rs 20,000. Many Bangalore apartment associations require debris to be cleared the same day and allow work only in set hours, so check the rules before you schedule.
New modular cabinets with a granite counter: Rs 1.8 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh. Laminate shutters sit at the lower end, acrylic and PU at the upper end.
Plumbing, including new CPVC lines, a new sink trap and drain, and points for a purifier and dishwasher: Rs 15,000 to Rs 45,000. In flats older than about fifteen years with galvanised iron pipes, replacing the kitchen section is usually worth it while the wall is open.
Electrical work, with dedicated points for the chimney, hob, microwave, mixer, purifier and fridge: Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000. Older kitchens were wired for a fridge and a mixer, not six appliances, and an overloaded socket is a real fire risk.
Wall tiles between the counter and the wall units (the dado): Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000. Floor tiles for a typical kitchen: Rs 15,000 to Rs 45,000 if replaced.
Chimney and hob: Rs 25,000 to Rs 70,000 for a 90 cm chimney and a three-burner hob.
Painting and ceiling touch-ups: Rs 8,000 to Rs 20,000.
Signs your kitchen needs more than a refresh
Water damage in the sink base is the clearest one. If the bottom panel has swollen or the side panels have opened at the joints, the carcass needs replacing, and the cause, usually a leaking trap or a gap between the sink and the counter, needs fixing too.
Tiles that sound hollow when tapped, or grout that stays dark and damp, point to water getting behind the dado. Re-tiling over the problem only moves it.
Sockets that are warm to the touch, a burning smell near the mixer point, or a breaker that trips when two appliances run together all mean the wiring needs attention, not a new extension board.
A layout that makes cooking hard, such as the hob in a corner where you cannot stand properly or the fridge opening into the walkway, is the other reason to go for a full renovation. Changing it later costs more than doing it once.

How Bangalore conditions affect a kitchen renovation
Hard water is common in areas that depend on borewell or tanker supply, including large parts of Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and the outer layouts. It leaves white scale on taps and steel sinks and stains glossy tiles. A matte tile behind the sink and a good tap with a replaceable aerator save years of scrubbing.
Monsoon humidity, from June through November, is hard on any board that is not water-resistant. Use BWP plywood for the sink base and the units beside it, and seal every cut edge.
Power cuts are less frequent than they once were, but a chimney or a purifier on a separate circuit is easier to run on backup. If your flat has partial power backup, ask which kitchen points it covers.
Doing a kitchen renovation while you live at home
A cabinet replacement in an occupied home usually takes two to three weeks, including a week without a usable kitchen while the old units come out and the new ones go in. A full renovation takes four to six weeks, and three of those can be without a kitchen.
Plan a temporary cooking setup in the dining area or utility with an induction cooktop, a microwave and a small table. Keep the fridge running in another room. Most families find the second week the hardest, so book takeaway for it in advance.
Order long-lead items first. Imported hardware, some acrylic shades and quartz counters can take three to five weeks to arrive, and they decide when the kitchen can be finished.
Where to spend and where to save
Spend on the parts you cannot easily change later: the plumbing, the wiring, the waterproofing at the sink wall and the carcass material in wet areas.
Save on what is easy to upgrade: open shelves instead of a few wall units, a simple laminate instead of acrylic, and standard accessories, which can be added later without taking anything apart.
