Open a well-made modular kitchen and the first thing you notice is how the drawers move. They glide out fully, carry a stack of steel plates without sagging and close softly on their own. In most Indian kitchens, that feel comes from a tandem box.
A tandem box is a complete drawer system: metal side walls with built-in runners, a soft-close mechanism and a back panel, into which a base and a front are fitted. It replaces the plywood drawer box and the separate channels of a carpenter-made drawer.
In 2026, a tandem box drawer with soft-close runners costs about Rs 4,000 to Rs 12,000 per drawer in Bangalore, installed, depending on the brand, the depth and the load rating. This guide explains how they work, which sizes suit which jobs and where they are worth the money.
How a tandem box differs from ordinary channels
A carpenter-made drawer is a plywood box screwed to a pair of telescopic channels. The channels carry the load, the box carries the contents and the two are only as good as the screws joining them. Over time, a heavy drawer sags at the front, rubs against the one below and stops closing straight.
In a tandem box, the side walls and the runners are one engineered unit. The load is carried by rollers hidden under the drawer, and the side walls are double-walled steel that does not bend. The result is a drawer that opens fully, stays level under load and keeps its alignment for years.
Most tandem systems also allow the front to be adjusted in height, side and tilt after installation, so a row of drawers can be lined up perfectly. That is hard to achieve with ordinary channels.
Standard sizes
Tandem boxes are sold by depth and height. Common depths are 350, 400, 450, 500 and 550 mm. A standard kitchen base unit in India is 560 to 600 mm deep, so 450 or 500 mm runners are the usual choice.
Heights come in roughly three groups. Low-sided boxes, around 80 to 90 mm, suit cutlery and spice drawers. Medium boxes, around 140 to 180 mm, suit everyday utensils. High-sided boxes with a gallery rail or a glass side, 200 mm and above, suit pots, pans, dabbas and plates.
Drawer widths follow the cabinet: 300, 450, 600, 750, 800 and 900 mm are common. Wide drawers over 800 mm need a higher load rating, and very wide drawers are better split into two.
Load ratings
Most tandem boxes carry 30 to 40 kg in standard versions and 50 to 70 kg in heavy-duty versions. A drawer full of steel vessels or a stack of plates can easily weigh 25 to 35 kg, so heavy-duty runners are worth it for the pot and plate drawers.
Do not use the same rating everywhere by default. Cutlery and spice drawers carry little weight and do not need the heavy-duty version.

Where tandem boxes are worth it
The pot and pan drawers under the hob come first. These are the heaviest drawers in the kitchen and they are used several times a day.
The plate and thali drawer comes next. A plate rack insert in a tall tandem drawer is more convenient than a wall-mounted rack and keeps plates out of sight.
The cutlery drawer near the hob or the sink is the third. A shallow tandem drawer with a cutlery tray is far easier to use than a basket.
The dry storage drawer for dabbas, rice and atta is the fourth. A tall drawer with an inner drawer lets you see and reach every container without bending.
For a typical 2 or 3 BHK kitchen, four to six tandem drawers in these places give most of the benefit. You do not need one in every base unit.
Tandem boxes and baskets
Many Indian kitchens still use stainless steel wire baskets on channels. They are cheaper, from Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000 each, they let water drain and they are easy to clean. Their weak points are the channels, which wear, and the open wire base, which small items fall through.
Tandem drawers cost more but carry more weight, close softly and look neater. A common middle path is tandem drawers for pots, plates and cutlery, and baskets for lighter items like spices or cleaning supplies.
What a tandem box costs
In 2026, a tandem drawer with soft-close runners costs about Rs 4,000 to Rs 12,000 per drawer installed, including the base and the front fitted to your shutter finish. Inner drawers, gallery rails and glass sides add Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000. Cutlery trays and plate inserts are priced separately.
Branded systems from established European and Indian hardware makers cost more than generic versions, but the difference shows in how the drawer feels after five years of daily use. A cheaper runner that loses its soft-close or starts to rattle costs more to replace than it saved.
How to check a tandem drawer before you sign
Ask for the brand and the model of the runner, not just "tandem box". Ask for the load rating of each drawer, and check that the heavy drawers have heavy-duty runners.
Open a sample drawer in the showroom fully loaded if you can. It should run smoothly to the end, stay level and close without bouncing.
Check the warranty on the hardware separately from the cabinet. Good tandem systems carry long warranties, often ten years or more from the manufacturer.
