In many older Bangalore flats the bathroom has a pedestal basin, a small mirror and a single shelf. Toothbrushes, creams and cleaning supplies end up on the basin's edge or the window sill. A vanity unit fixes that: a counter for the basin, storage below and a mirror cabinet above.
A bathroom vanity has to handle more water, steam and daily wear than any other cabinet in the home. Material choice, sizing and plumbing matter more than looks, although a good vanity also changes how a bathroom looks.
This guide covers vanity types, sizes, materials that survive bathrooms, tops, mirrors, lighting and costs in 2026.
Types of vanity units
Wall-hung vanities are fixed to the wall with the floor clear below. They make a small bathroom look larger, are easier to clean around and stay away from water on the floor. They are the best choice for most Indian bathrooms.
Floor-standing vanities sit on legs or a plinth. They hold more storage but are closer to wet floors, so the base must be fully waterproof.
Countertop vanities have a basin sitting on top of a counter. They look modern and suit larger bathrooms.
Undermount and integrated vanities have the basin set below or moulded into the counter. They are easiest to wipe clean.
Corner vanities fit into small or awkward bathrooms where wall space is limited.
Standard sizes
A small vanity is 18 to 24 inches wide and suits powder rooms and compact bathrooms.
A standard vanity is 30 to 36 inches wide and suits most bedroom bathrooms.
A double vanity, with two basins, is 48 to 60 inches wide and suits master bathrooms.
Depth is usually 18 to 21 inches. In narrow bathrooms, slim vanities of 12 to 15 inches deep are available.
Counter height is usually 32 to 34 inches from the floor, slightly higher than the old standard, which is more comfortable for adults.
Materials that survive a bathroom
The carcass is the most important choice. Use BWP or marine plywood, PVC or WPC board, or solid surface. Ordinary plywood, particle board and MDF swell within a year or two near water.
Edges must be sealed with thick edge banding. Most vanity failures start where water seeps into an exposed edge.
Shutters can be laminate, acrylic or PU paint on a waterproof board. Matte laminates hide water spots.
Hardware should be stainless steel 304 or better. Hinges and handles in lower grades rust in bathrooms.
Counter tops
Granite and quartz are the most practical vanity tops: hard, stain resistant and easy to clean.
Marble looks elegant but stains with hair dye, oils and soap, and needs sealing.
Solid surface tops can have the basin moulded in, with no joint to collect dirt.
Ceramic and sintered stone tops resist almost everything but cost more.
Mirrors and mirror cabinets
A mirror cabinet above the vanity hides creams, medicines and razors behind a mirrored door. It is the most useful storage in a small bathroom.
Size the mirror to the vanity width or slightly narrower. Mount it so the centre is at eye level, about 5 to 5.5 feet from the floor.
Anti-fog mirrors with heating pads, or mirrors with built-in LED lighting, are worth it in bathrooms without strong ventilation.

Lighting
Light from the front or sides of the face is better than light from above, which casts shadows under the eyes. LED strips around the mirror or a pair of wall lights on either side give even light.
Use a neutral white, around 4,000 K, so skin tones and makeup look natural.
All bathroom fittings should be rated for wet areas.
Plumbing and planning
Plan the vanity before the bathroom is tiled. The water inlets and the drain need to sit at the right height and position for a wall-hung unit.
Leave access to the trap and the angle valves inside the vanity, with a removable back panel or a cut-out.
If the bathroom has an existing pedestal basin, the drain is usually in the floor. A wall-hung vanity may need the drain moved into the wall, which means some chiselling and re-tiling.
Storage inside the vanity
Drawers are more useful than a single cupboard. A shallow top drawer for daily items and a deep bottom drawer for refills and towels works well.
Plan around the trap and pipes, with a U-shaped drawer or a shelf that clears the pipes.
Keep cleaning supplies in a separate section from personal items.
Vanities for small bathrooms
Many Bangalore bathrooms are only 5 by 7 or 5 by 8 feet. A full-width vanity would block the door, so a slim wall-hung unit of 18 to 24 inches, with a shallow basin, is often the best fit.
A corner basin with a small cabinet below works when the wall beside the door is short. A mirror cabinet becomes the main storage, so make it as wide as the wall allows.
Open shelves under a wall-hung basin, finished in a waterproof material, hold towels and look lighter than a closed cabinet in a tight room.
What a bathroom vanity costs
In 2026, a wall-hung vanity of 24 to 36 inches with a waterproof carcass, laminate shutters and a granite or quartz top costs about Rs 18,000 to Rs 45,000 in Bangalore, excluding the basin and tap. A vanity with a mirror cabinet costs Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000. Double vanities and premium finishes cost Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh.
