In a Bangalore flat, the space under the bed is one of the largest storage areas in the home. A queen-size bed covers about 30 sq ft of floor, and a box bed turns the space beneath it into storage for quilts, suitcases, out-of-season clothes and the things that have no other place.
A box bed is a bed with an enclosed base that works as a storage box. Access is through lift-up panels on top, drawers at the side, or a hydraulic mechanism that raises the whole mattress platform.
The idea is simple, but the details decide whether you actually use the storage or forget what is inside. This guide covers the types of box beds, the sizes, the materials, design ideas and what they cost in 2026.
Types of box beds
Lift-up panel beds have two or three sections on top that you lift by hand after moving the mattress. They are the cheapest and simplest, but the mattress is heavy and most people stop using the storage after a few months.
Drawer beds have two to four drawers on the sides or at the foot end. They are easy to open daily and suit clothes and bedding you need often. They need about 2 feet of clear floor beside the bed to open fully.
Hydraulic beds have gas-lift pistons that raise the whole platform with the mattress on it. One person can lift a queen-size platform easily, and the full storage box is visible at once. They cost more but are the most used.
Combination beds have drawers at the foot end and a hydraulic or lift-up section at the head end, which gives daily access and deep storage in one bed.
Standard sizes
A single bed for a child or guest is usually 3 by 6.25 feet. A queen bed is 5 by 6.5 feet, and a king bed 6 by 6.5 feet. Indian mattress sizes vary slightly, so build the bed around the mattress you will use.
The bed height, to the top of the mattress, is usually 18 to 22 inches. Box beds tend to sit a little higher because of the storage depth. A storage depth of 10 to 12 inches holds quilts and suitcases well without making the bed too tall.
Leave at least 2 feet of walking space around the bed, and more on the side where drawers open.
Materials
Plywood is the most common material for custom box beds. Use BWR or better for the base, because the box sits on a floor that is mopped daily. A laminate or veneer finish on the outside, and a smooth laminate inside, makes the storage easy to clean.
Engineered wood and particle board beds from furniture shops are cheaper but weaker, especially at the hinges and the hydraulic fixing points.
Solid wood beds in teak or sheesham last longest but cost much more, and the storage box inside is often still made of plywood.
Upholstered beds, with fabric or leatherette over the frame and headboard, look softer and suit modern bedrooms. Choose a fabric that can be cleaned easily.
Getting the storage right
Divide the box into two or three compartments, so items do not slide into one heap. A divider also stiffens the base.
Put a ventilation gap or a few small holes in the base panels. Bangalore's humidity in the monsoon can make quilts stored in a sealed box smell musty.
Line the inside with laminate rather than leaving bare plywood, so it can be wiped clean.
Keep a slatted or perforated top under the mattress so the mattress breathes.
Plan storage around what you own.
Hydraulic bed quality
Check the rating of the gas pistons. They must match the weight of the platform and the mattress, or the bed will either refuse to stay open or spring up too fast.
Ask for branded hydraulic fittings and a warranty on them. Cheap pistons lose pressure in two or three years.
A locking mechanism or a stay that holds the platform open safely is important in homes with children.
Headboard and design ideas
A tall upholstered headboard, 4 to 5 feet high, makes a box bed look softer and gives a comfortable back rest for reading.
A headboard with built-in side shelves or niches replaces side tables in small rooms.
A low wooden headboard with a wall panel behind it suits modern rooms and keeps the wall above free for art or a window.
Rounded corners at the foot of the bed prevent bruised shins in tight rooms.
Box beds in small rooms
In a 10 by 10-foot bedroom, a queen bed with drawers can be awkward because the drawers need floor space. A hydraulic bed is usually the better choice there, since it opens upwards.
Push the bed against one wall in a children's room to free floor space, and use the hydraulic box for toys and seasonal clothes.
What a box bed costs
In 2026, a custom plywood box bed with a laminate finish costs about Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 for a queen size and Rs 35,000 to Rs 75,000 for a king in Bangalore. A hydraulic storage bed costs about Rs 40,000 to Rs 90,000. An upholstered headboard adds Rs 15,000 to Rs 45,000. Solid wood box beds cost from about Rs 70,000 to well over Rs 2 lakh.
