Almost every piece of built-in furniture in an Indian home, from the kitchen and wardrobes to the TV unit and the beds, starts with a sheet of plywood. You never see it once the laminate is on. That is exactly why it matters: the grade of plywood inside decides whether a kitchen lasts five years or fifteen, and it is the easiest place for a vendor to cut costs without you noticing.
Here is a plain explanation of plywood types and grades in India, where to use each one in a home, how to check what you are getting and what it costs.
What plywood is
Plywood is made of thin layers of wood, called veneers, glued together with the grain of each layer at right angles to the one below. This cross-layering makes it strong in both directions and less likely to split or warp than solid wood.
The quality of plywood depends on three things: the glue, the wood used in the core, and how carefully the sheets are pressed and finished.
MR, BWR and BWP grades
MR stands for moisture resistant. It is bonded with urea formaldehyde resin and handles normal indoor humidity, but not direct water. It suits wardrobes, TV units, beds and wall units in dry rooms.
BWR stands for boiling water resistant. It uses stronger resins that resist water much better than MR. It suits kitchen wall units, tall units and wardrobes on external walls or near bathrooms.
BWP stands for boiling water proof. It is bonded with phenol formaldehyde resin, which is the most water-resistant. It suits kitchen sink units, bathroom vanities and anything that may get wet.
Marine plywood is made to the IS 710 standard, with BWP-grade bonding and higher quality veneers with fewer gaps. It is the strongest and most water-resistant plywood, used for the most demanding wet areas.
General-purpose plywood in India is made to the IS 303 standard. Look for the ISI mark and the grade printed on each sheet.
Core woods
The core is the inner layers of the sheet. Hardwood cores, such as gurjan and other dense tropical hardwoods, are heavier, hold screws better and resist sagging. Gurjan face veneers are often used on good-quality BWP and marine plywood.
Poplar and eucalyptus cores are lighter and cheaper. They are fine for many uses but hold screws less firmly, especially after repeated assembly.
Ask the vendor what the core is, not only the grade.
Thickness for different uses
Carcasses, the sides and shelves of kitchen and wardrobe units, usually use 18 or 19 mm plywood.
Backs of cabinets use 6 to 9 mm plywood. Thin backs are fine when they sit in a groove and are supported by the sides.
Shutters are often 18 mm plywood with laminate on both sides, or HDHMR or MDF for painted and profiled shutters.
Long shelves of more than about 30 inches between supports need 18 to 25 mm plywood or a support in the middle.
Pick finishes that suit Bangalore's weather.
Where to use each grade in a home
In the kitchen, use BWP or marine plywood for the sink base and the units beside it, BWR or BWP for base units elsewhere, and BWR for wall and tall units.
In bathrooms, use BWP, marine plywood or WPC for vanity cabinets.
In bedrooms and the living room, MR or BWR plywood works for wardrobes, beds and TV units. Use BWR on wardrobes against an external wall or a wall shared with a bathroom.
For outdoor or semi-outdoor furniture on balconies, use marine plywood with a waterproof finish, or a material such as WPC or aluminium.
Emissions and indoor air
Plywood glues can release formaldehyde, especially when new. Look for E1 or E0 emission grades, which release much less. This matters most in bedrooms and children's rooms. Air the room well for a few days after new furniture is installed.
How to check plywood quality
Check the ISI mark and the licence number printed on each sheet. You can verify the licence number on the BIS website or app.
Look at the edges. Good plywood shows even layers without large gaps or overlaps in the core.
Check the thickness with a measuring tape at several points. Calibrated plywood has the same thickness across the sheet, which matters for clean joints.
Ask for the brand, grade, thickness and core to be written into the quote and the bill. "Plywood as per standard" is not a specification.
Mistakes to avoid
Accepting "commercial ply" in the kitchen is the most common. It usually means MR grade, which does not belong under a sink.
Comparing quotes on price per square foot without checking the grade, thickness and core is the second. Two quotes at the same rate can use very different boards.
Ignoring edges is the third. Even BWP plywood absorbs water through an unsealed edge. Good factories edge-band every cut edge with a strong adhesive.
Storing new sheets flat on a wet floor on site is the fourth. Plywood should be stacked on battens, off the floor and covered, until it is used.
What plywood costs in 2026
Prices vary by brand, core and thickness. As a guide for 18 mm sheets in Bangalore: MR plywood costs about Rs 75 to Rs 130 per sq ft, BWR about Rs 95 to Rs 160 per sq ft, and BWP and marine plywood about Rs 130 to Rs 220 per sq ft.
The difference between MR and BWP for a typical kitchen is a few thousand rupees in material. It is one of the cheapest upgrades in an interior project and one of the most important.
