East facing homes are among the most sought after in India. The morning sun reaches the front of the house first, and many families associate the east with new beginnings and good health. In Bangalore, east facing plots and flats often carry a small premium.
A house is called east facing when its main entrance faces east, which usually means the road is on the east side. In an apartment, the direction is usually taken from the main door of the flat.
This guide explains what Vastu traditionally recommends for an east facing house: where to place the main door, how to arrange the rooms and what to do when the plan does not match the ideal.
Why east facing homes are preferred
The east is associated with the rising sun, light and energy. An east facing entrance gets morning sunlight, which warms and dries the entrance and the front rooms.
From a practical view, an east front gets gentle morning sun and stays cooler in the afternoon, which suits Bangalore's climate.
Main door placement
Vastu divides each side of the plot into nine parts, called padas. For an east facing house, the main door is traditionally placed in the northern half of the east wall, towards the north-east, avoiding the extreme north-east corner itself.
The south-east part of the east wall is usually avoided for the main door.
A practical way to apply this is to keep the door in the middle to north side of the east face, with a clear, well-lit approach.
Room placement
Living room: north-east or east, so the main gathering space gets morning light.
Pooja room: north-east, the most preferred position.
Kitchen: south-east, associated with fire. North-west is the traditional alternative.
Master bedroom: south-west, associated with stability.
Children's bedroom: west or north-west.
Guest bedroom: north-west.
Dining room: west or east, close to the kitchen.
Bathrooms and toilets: north-west or west, avoiding the north-east and south-west.
Staircase: south, west or south-west, and traditionally climbing clockwise.
Study: east or north, for good light.
Open spaces and heights
Vastu suggests keeping more open space on the east and north sides of the plot, and placing heavier structures, taller sections and the staircase towards the south and west.
In a house, this means a larger front setback, a garden or open parking on the east, and the overhead water tank on the south-west.
Windows and light
Give the east wall generous windows, so morning light enters the living room and kitchen. Keep these windows clear of heavy curtains during the day.
Smaller windows on the west reduce afternoon heat.
Colours
Light colours suit east facing homes: white, cream, light yellow, light green and light blue. They reflect the morning light and keep rooms bright.

East facing flats
In apartments, you cannot change the layout, but you can arrange furniture and use rooms to follow the main principles.
Place the pooja unit in the north-east corner of the living room.
Use the south-west bedroom as the master bedroom.
Keep the north-east corner of each room light and uncluttered.
Common issues and remedies
If the kitchen is in the north-east, many families use light colours, avoid heavy storage in that corner and place the stove in the south-east part of the kitchen.
If a toilet is in the north-east, keep it clean, well ventilated and with the door closed.
If the main door is in the south-east part of the east wall, families often add a threshold, good lighting and auspicious symbols at the entrance.
These are traditional remedies. The more useful step is to plan well at the design stage.
Plot shape and slope
Vastu prefers square or rectangular plots. Many Bangalore plots are rectangular, such as 30x40, 30x50 and 40x60, which suit Vastu planning well.
The ground should ideally slope gently down towards the east and north, so rainwater drains away from the south-west. In a new house, the levels can be set during construction so the finished ground slopes this way.
Cut corners, especially in the north-east, are traditionally avoided. Extended north-east corners are considered good.
Water, parking and the garden
Vastu places underground water, such as a sump or borewell, in the north-east, and the overhead tank in the south-west. This suits an east facing plot, where the north-east is part of the open front.
Place the car porch on the east or north-east side, so the front stays open. Keep tall trees on the south and west, and lawns, low plants and a small water feature on the east and north.
Furniture and interior details
In the living room, place heavy sofas and the TV unit against the south and west walls, so the north-east of the room stays open.
In the master bedroom, place the bed so the head faces south. Keep wardrobes on the south and west walls.
In the kitchen, place the stove so the cook faces east. This works naturally when the kitchen is in the south-east and the counter runs along the east wall.
Keep mirrors off the walls facing the bed.
An east facing house on a 30x40 site
On a typical 30x40 east facing site, a common Vastu-friendly ground floor puts the entrance and living room on the east, the pooja room in the north-east, the kitchen in the south-east, the master bedroom in the south-west and a bathroom in the north-west. The staircase rises along the south or west wall to the first floor, where bedrooms follow the same pattern.
Practical design tips
Use the east-facing front for a welcoming entrance with planters and good lighting.
Plan the car porch on the east or north so the open side stays open.
Plan the overhead water tank and the staircase on the south-west in a new house.
