In Vastu, the north is associated with Kubera, the lord of wealth, and with opportunity and growth. Many families consider north facing homes especially good for business owners and professionals, and they are widely preferred in Bangalore.
A house is north facing when its main entrance faces north, usually because the road is on the north side. In flats, the direction is taken from the main door of the flat.
This guide explains what Vastu traditionally recommends for a north facing house, from the main door to each room, along with practical design notes.
Why north facing homes are preferred
The north is linked with wealth and prosperity in Vastu. In practical terms, a north front gets indirect light all day without harsh direct sun, which keeps the front rooms bright and cool.
Main door placement
For a north facing house, Vastu traditionally places the main door in the middle to north-east part of the north wall. The central padas and those towards the north-east are preferred.
The north-west end of the north wall is usually avoided for the main door.
In practice, keep the door in the centre or slightly towards the east of the north face, with a clear entrance.
Room placement
Living room: north or north-east, open and bright.
Pooja room: north-east.
Kitchen: south-east, with the north-west as the alternative.
Master bedroom: south-west.
Children's bedroom: west or north-west.
Guest bedroom: north-west.
Dining room: west, near the kitchen.
Bathrooms and toilets: north-west or west, avoiding the north-east and the centre.
Staircase: south, west or south-west.
Study or home office: north or east.
Open spaces and heights
Keep the north and east sides more open, with a larger setback, a garden or open parking on the north.
Place heavier structures, the staircase and the overhead water tank on the south and west.
Keep the north-east corner of the plot and the house light, low and uncluttered.
Windows and light
The north wall gets steady, indirect light, which is ideal for living rooms, studies and workspaces. Use generous windows on the north.
Reduce window sizes on the west to keep afternoon heat out.
Colours
Green, light blue, white and cream suit north facing homes. Green is associated with the north in Vastu, and light colours keep the home bright.
North facing flats
Place the pooja unit in the north-east corner of the living room.
Use the south-west bedroom as the master bedroom.
Keep the north wall of the living room open, with light furniture and no heavy storage.
Place heavy wardrobes on the south and west walls of bedrooms.
Checking a north facing flat before you buy
Confirm the direction with a compass app standing at the flat's main door, not from the brochure. Many towers are slightly rotated, and a flat sold as north facing may face north-west or north-east.
Check where the kitchen, the master bedroom and the toilets sit in the plan, and whether the north-east corner of the flat is a living area or a toilet.
Visit at different times of day. A north facing flat should feel bright without direct glare, and the balconies on the north should stay usable in the afternoon.
Talk through layout, budget and timeline.
Common issues and remedies
If the main door is towards the north-west, families often add a threshold, bright lighting and a nameplate at the entrance.
If a toilet is in the north-east, keep it clean, ventilated and closed, and use light colours.
If the kitchen is in the north-east, move the stove to the south-east part of the kitchen and keep the north-east corner light.
Plot shape and slope
Square and rectangular plots are preferred. On a north facing plot, the ground should ideally slope gently down towards the north and east, so rainwater flows away from the south-west.
Avoid cut corners in the north-east. An extended north-east corner is considered favourable.
Water, parking and the garden
Place the sump or borewell in the north-east, and the overhead water tank in the south-west.
The car porch works well on the north or north-east, which keeps the front open and bright.
Keep tall trees and heavy planters on the south and west, and lawns or low plants on the north and east.
The main door itself
Vastu prefers a main door that is the largest door in the house, opening inward and clockwise, made of good-quality wood or a solid engineered door. A threshold at the entrance is traditional.
Keep the area in front of the main door clean, well lit and free of obstructions like poles, large trees or a staircase directly facing it.
Furniture and interior details
In the living room, place heavy sofas, cabinets and the TV unit against the south and west walls.
In bedrooms, place the bed so the head faces south or east, and keep wardrobes on the south and west walls.
In the kitchen, place the stove so the cook faces east, and keep the sink away from the stove, ideally towards the north-east part of the kitchen.
A north facing house on a 30x40 site
On a north facing 30x40 site, a common Vastu-friendly ground floor puts the entrance in the middle of the north wall, the living room in the north and north-east, the pooja room in the north-east corner, the kitchen in the south-east and the master bedroom in the south-west. The staircase runs along the south or west, and a bathroom sits in the north-west or west.
North facing homes for work and business
Many families who run businesses or work from home prefer north facing homes. Place the home office or study in the north or east, with the desk positioned so you face north or east while working, and keep the area uncluttered.
