The L-shaped sofa has become the default choice in many Bangalore living rooms. It seats more people than a three-seater, fits into a corner and gives one person room to stretch out on the chaise or the long side. For families who watch TV together, it is often the most used piece of furniture in the home.
It also takes a lot of space, and the wrong size or orientation can block a doorway, crowd the TV wall or leave guests with nowhere to sit. Planning it on paper first saves a costly mistake.
This guide covers sizes, configurations, fabrics, layouts and what an L-shaped sofa costs in 2026.
Common sizes
A compact L-shaped sofa is about 7 by 5 feet and seats four. It suits small living rooms in 2 BHK flats.
A standard L-shaped sofa is about 8 to 9 feet by 5.5 to 6 feet and seats five to six. It suits most 3 BHK living rooms.
A large sectional is 10 feet or more on the long side and seats seven or more. It suits villas and large living rooms.
Seat depth is usually 21 to 24 inches, seat height 16 to 18 inches and overall depth 32 to 38 inches. Deeper seats are comfortable for lounging but harder for older people to get out of.
Left or right chaise
An L-shaped sofa is described by the side of the short arm, or chaise, when you face the sofa. A right-hand sofa has the short arm on your right as you face it.
Draw the room plan and mark the TV, the windows and the door before choosing. The short arm should not block the walkway, and the person on the chaise should be able to see the TV without turning their head.
Some sofas come with a reversible chaise that can be moved to either side. They are useful if you might move house.
Configurations
A corner L-sofa sits against two walls and leaves the centre of the room open.
A floating L-sofa sits away from the walls and divides an open living and dining area. Its back faces the dining table and forms a soft boundary.
An L-sofa with a chaise has a long, deep seat at one end for stretching out.
A modular sectional is made of separate pieces that can be rearranged, which is useful in rooms you may change later.
Layouts for small living rooms
In a living room of 11 by 13 feet, a compact L-sofa of 7 by 5 feet fits against two walls with a coffee table in front and room for a TV unit opposite.
Leave at least 2.5 to 3 feet of walking space in front of the sofa and between the sofa and the TV unit.
Choose slim arms, raised legs and a low back. They make a sofa look lighter and the room larger.
Avoid oversized recliners in small rooms. One recliner seat at the end is often enough.
Layouts for larger rooms
In a large living room, float the L-sofa and add a pair of accent chairs opposite it to form a conversation area.
Use a large rug that sits under the front legs of the sofa and chairs, to tie the seating together.
A console table behind a floating sofa holds lamps and books and hides the sofa's back.

Fabrics and upholstery
Fabric sofas are the most common in India. Choose tightly woven fabrics like linen blends, cotton blends and polyester weaves for durability.
Velvet looks rich but marks easily and attracts dust in Bangalore homes with open windows.
Leatherette is easy to wipe but can feel hot in summer and may peel after a few years.
Genuine leather lasts long and ages well but costs much more.
Choose removable, washable covers if you have young children or pets.
Mid-tone colours like grey, beige, olive and rust hide marks better than white or very dark fabrics.
Frame and cushioning
Look for a solid wood or engineered wood frame with good joinery. A sofa that creaks in the showroom will be worse at home.
High-density foam, at least 32 to 40 density for the seat, keeps its shape. Lower-density foam sags within a year or two.
Pocket springs or webbing under the seat foam add comfort and life.
Matching the sofa to the room
Match the sofa colour to the room's palette: a neutral sofa lets you change cushions, curtains and rugs over the years.
Keep the sofa's legs and the TV unit's finish in related wood tones, or contrast them clearly.
Buying in a showroom or made to order
Showroom sofas let you sit before you buy and usually arrive in a few days. Their sizes are fixed, so measure the room, the lift and the doorways before ordering. Large L-shaped sofas often have to be carried up the stairs in apartments where the lift is too small.
Made-to-order sofas can be sized to the exact wall and the exact chaise depth you want, in the fabric you choose. They take three to six weeks and need clear drawings. Ask to sit on a sample with the same foam density before confirming.
Either way, check the warranty on the frame and the foam separately.
What an L-shaped sofa costs
In 2026, a compact fabric L-shaped sofa costs about Rs 35,000 to Rs 70,000 in Bangalore. A standard 5 to 6-seater with good foam and a solid frame costs Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh. Custom-made sofas, recliner sectionals and genuine leather versions cost Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh and more.
