The main gate is the face of an independent house. It is the first thing neighbours and visitors see, it decides how the house looks from the street, and it has to open every day for a car, a bike, school runs and deliveries. In Bangalore's layouts, where houses sit close to each other on 30x40 and 40x60 sites, the gate and compound wall are often the main part of the facade you can see from the road.
A good gate is secure, easy to open, rust-free after many monsoons and in keeping with the house. Here are main gate designs for Indian homes, with materials, sizes, automation and costs.
Types of main gates
A swing gate opens on hinges, either as a single leaf or a pair. It is simple and reliable, but needs clear space inside the compound to swing open, which may be hard on small sites where the car parks just inside.
A sliding gate moves sideways along a track. It needs a clear length of wall beside the opening equal to the gate's width, but no swing space, which suits small sites and sloping driveways.
A folding or bi-fold gate folds in sections. It needs less swing space than a single large leaf.
A telescopic sliding gate uses two or more overlapping panels, needing less side space than a standard sliding gate.
Many houses add a small wicket gate, a pedestrian door, beside or within the main gate, so the main gate does not have to open for every person.
Gate materials
Mild steel (MS) is the most common gate material. It is strong and can be made in any design. It must be galvanised or primed and powder-coated to resist rust in the monsoon.
Stainless steel, in SS 304, does not rust and needs little maintenance, but costs more and suits simple designs.
Wrought iron gives a traditional, decorative look with scrolls and motifs. It is heavy and needs regular painting.
Aluminium is light and rust-free, which suits large sliding gates and automated gates.
Wood and wood-look gates use real hardwood, WPC panels or HPL (high pressure laminate) sheets fixed on a steel frame. They give a warm, modern look. Real wood needs polish every year or two; WPC and HPL need little care.
Main gate design ideas
Horizontal slats, in steel or wood-look panels with narrow gaps, give a clean modern look and some privacy.
Vertical bars with a solid lower panel suit most houses and are hard to climb.
Laser-cut panels with geometric or traditional jali patterns give privacy and a strong feature.
A combination of a solid steel frame with WPC or HPL panels in a wood finish matches modern elevations with wooden accents.
A traditional design with a decorative top and a central motif suits houses with a classic elevation.
A full-height gate with a matching wicket and a small canopy above the entrance gives a finished look.
Sizes
A car gate is usually 10 to 12 feet wide for a single car, more for two cars or a larger vehicle. A pedestrian gate is 3 to 4 feet wide.
Gate height is usually 5 to 6 feet. Very tall gates feel closed off and can be restricted by local rules; check before building.
Match the gate's height and line to the compound wall, so they read as one design.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
Matching the compound wall
The compound wall and gate work together. A plain plastered wall painted in the house's colour, with the gate as the feature, is the simplest approach. Stone cladding, grooves or a contrasting coping on the wall add detail.
Leave openings or a grill section in long walls on narrow plots to let air through and avoid a fortress feel. Put the house number, the letter box and a light into the wall beside the gate.
Automation
Automated gates, with a motor, a remote and safety sensors, are popular for sliding and swing gates on busy roads, where stopping to open a gate is inconvenient. Sliding gates are generally easier to automate.
Choose a motor rated for your gate's weight, add a manual release for power cuts, and fit safety sensors so the gate stops if a person or a car is in the way.
Maintenance in Bangalore weather
Most rust on MS gates starts at welds and the bottom edge, where water collects. Galvanising before powder coating, sealing joints and keeping the bottom clear of standing water make a gate last for decades.
Lubricate hinges, wheels and tracks before and after the monsoon.
Gates on sloping and narrow plots
Many Bangalore sites slope towards or away from the road. A swing gate on a slope can scrape the driveway as it opens. Sliding gates or swing gates that open outward (where local rules and the road allow) work better, and a level landing just inside the gate helps.
On narrow 20x30 or 30x40 plots, where the gate takes most of the frontage, a single sliding gate with a built-in wicket door keeps the frontage clean and saves the wall space a separate pedestrian gate would need.
What a main gate costs in Bangalore
In 2026, an MS gate with powder coating costs about Rs 400 to Rs 900 per sq ft depending on the design. A 12 by 6-foot MS gate therefore costs about Rs 30,000 to Rs 65,000. SS 304 gates cost about Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 per sq ft. Gates with WPC or HPL wood-look panels cost about Rs 700 to Rs 1,500 per sq ft.
Gate automation usually adds Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh depending on the motor and gate type. A compound wall with a gate on a 30x40 site typically costs Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in total.
