Most internal doors in Indian homes today are flush doors. Bedroom doors, study doors and many main doors start as a flush door: a flat panel with a wooden frame inside and a smooth surface on both faces. The finish on top, whether laminate, veneer, paint or a design overlay, is what makes them look different.
Flush doors are affordable, stable and easy to finish in almost any style. But quality varies widely. A good solid-core door feels heavy, closes quietly and lasts decades. A cheap hollow door sounds thin, dents easily and can warp within a few years.
This guide explains how flush doors are made, the types, finishes and designs, how to judge quality and what they cost in 2026.
How flush doors are made
A flush door has a frame of wooden stiles and rails, a core inside the frame and a face sheet of plywood or HDF on both sides. The face sheets are glued and pressed to the core, giving a flat, smooth surface.
The core decides how strong, heavy and quiet the door is.
Solid-core flush doors
Solid-core doors have a core of tightly packed wooden blocks or particle board filling the whole frame. They are heavy, strong and good at blocking sound.
They suit bedroom doors, main doors and any door where privacy and durability matter.
Hollow-core flush doors
Hollow-core doors have a honeycomb of paper or thin wood strips inside the frame. They are light and cheap, but dent easily, block little sound and can warp.
They suit storerooms and rarely used doors, but are not a good choice for bedrooms.
Waterproof flush doors
BWP or marine-grade flush doors use waterproof glue and treated timber. They suit bathroom doors and areas with humidity. Sealing the edges is still essential.
Finishes
Laminate is the most practical finish: durable, easy to clean and available in many wood grains and colours. A laminate on both faces keeps the door balanced and less likely to warp.
Veneer is a thin sheet of real wood, polished to show the grain. It gives the warmest, most natural look but needs care.
Paint, usually PU or enamel, gives a smooth solid colour. It suits modern interiors and can be touched up.
Membrane and PVC foil finishes allow routed or embossed designs, like raised panels or grooves.
Design ideas
Plain flush doors with a matte laminate and slim handles suit modern interiors.
Grooved or routed lines on a painted or membrane door add pattern.
A veneer door with a contrasting strip or an inlaid metal line looks premium.
A flush door with a vision panel of frosted glass suits studies and kitchens.
Flush doors with fluted or louvered overlays follow current design trends.
Sizes
Standard internal doors in Indian homes are 30 to 36 inches wide and about 7 feet tall. Main doors are usually 36 to 42 inches wide. Common thicknesses are 30, 32 and 35 mm for internal doors, and 35 to 40 mm for main doors.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
Frames
Flush doors hang in a frame of hardwood, engineered wood or WPC. Hardwood frames are traditional; WPC frames resist moisture and termites, which suits bathrooms and kitchens.
Make sure the frame is fixed firmly to the wall with enough hold-fasts or anchors. A weak frame causes the door to sag.
Hardware
Use three hinges on heavy solid-core doors, not two.
Choose a good lock, handle and door stopper. Mortise locks are more secure than tubular locks.
A soft door closer on the main door keeps it from slamming.
How to judge quality
Check the weight. A solid-core door feels noticeably heavy.
Tap the face. A dull, solid sound means a solid core; a hollow sound means a hollow core.
Ask for the brand, the core type and the glue grade in writing.
Check that the edges are sealed or lipped, especially at the bottom of bathroom doors.
What flush doors cost
In 2026, a solid-core flush door shutter costs about Rs 3,500 to Rs 9,000 in Bangalore, depending on thickness and brand. A flush door laminated on both sides costs about Rs 8,000 to Rs 18,000. A veneer door with polish costs Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. Frames cost about Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 in WPC or hardwood, and good hardware adds Rs 2,000 to Rs 8,000. Replacing a bedroom door with frame, hardware and fitting usually costs Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000.
A main door with a laminate or veneer flush shutter and a hardwood frame costs about Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000.
Doors for the main entrance
A flush door can work as a main door if it is a thick solid-core shutter of 35 to 40 mm, finished with veneer or a good laminate, in a hardwood frame. Add a mortise lock, a door viewer, a safety chain and a door closer.
Many families add a decorative overlay on the outer face, such as a grooved pattern, a brass inlay or a fluted panel, so the main door looks distinct from the bedroom doors.
For more security, pair the main door with a steel safety door outside, or choose a steel-reinforced engineered door.
Doors for a whole home
Use the same door style, finish and handle throughout the home for a calm look, with the main door and pooja room door as the exceptions. Order all the doors from one supplier and batch, so the laminate or veneer matches.
Care and maintenance
Wipe laminate and painted doors with a damp cloth. Polish veneer doors every few years.
Keep bathroom doors closed while showering and wipe the bottom edge if water splashes.
Oil hinges once a year and tighten loose screws.
