uPVC doors have become a common choice for balconies, terraces and kitchens in new Bangalore homes. They seal tightly against rain, dust and noise, they do not rot or swell, and they need almost no maintenance.
They are not a replacement for every door. uPVC suits doors that open to the outside or face moisture, while main doors and bedroom doors usually need the weight, security and feel of wood or engineered doors.
This guide covers the types of uPVC doors, where they work best, how they compare with other materials and what they cost in 2026.
What uPVC doors are
uPVC doors use frames made of rigid PVC profiles with internal chambers and steel reinforcement, the same system used in uPVC windows. The frame holds glass panels, solid uPVC panels or a mix of both.
Rubber gaskets and multi-point locks seal the door when closed, which keeps out rain, dust and noise.
Sliding doors
uPVC sliding doors are the most common type. They suit balconies, terraces and wide openings, because the sashes slide sideways instead of swinging into the room.
Two-track sliding doors have two sashes; three-track doors allow two sashes plus a mosquito mesh.
Lift and slide doors, which lift slightly off the track before sliding, seal more tightly and suit large openings.
Casement and French doors
uPVC casement doors swing open on hinges like a regular door. They seal more tightly than sliding doors.
French doors have two casement sashes that open from the middle, giving a wide opening to a balcony or garden.
Folding doors
Bi-fold or folding doors have several panels that fold back to open almost the whole wall. They suit living rooms that open to a terrace or garden.
Bathroom and utility doors
Solid uPVC panel doors are used for bathrooms and utility areas, where moisture damages wooden doors. They are waterproof and easy to clean, though they look plainer than wooden doors.
Where uPVC doors work best
Balcony and terrace doors, where rain, dust and wind are common.
Kitchen doors to a utility area.
Bathroom doors in homes where wooden doors have swollen or rotted.
Street-facing rooms, where noise reduction matters.
Where other doors are better
Main doors, where security and a solid look matter. Use wood, engineered doors or a steel security door.
Bedroom doors, where a solid, quiet door with a wood finish is usually preferred.
Very large sliding openings, where aluminium allows slimmer frames and bigger glass.
Plan doors, stairs and the facade together.
UPVC compared with other materials
Wood looks warm and feels solid but can swell, warp and attract termites in wet areas.
Aluminium is stronger and slimmer, suits very large openings and looks more modern, but insulates less unless thermally broken.
WPC doors are solid, waterproof and termite proof, and suit bathroom and bedroom doors. They are heavier and look more like wood than uPVC.
PVC doors, not to be confused with uPVC framed doors, are cheaper hollow panels used mainly for bathrooms.
Glass choices
Use toughened glass in sliding and French doors for safety.
Laminated or double-glazed units reduce noise and heat.
Frosted glass or a solid lower panel gives privacy in bathrooms and ground-floor rooms.
Colours and finishes
White is the standard uPVC colour. Wood-grain and coloured laminated profiles cost more but suit homes where white frames look out of place.
Match the door frames to the windows on the same face of the house.
Hardware and security
Multi-point locks engage at several points along the frame. Ask for them on balcony and terrace doors.
Handles, rollers and hinges should be from a known brand. Cheap rollers wear quickly on heavy sliding doors.
Add a mosquito mesh track on sliding doors if you plan to keep them open.
What uPVC doors cost
In 2026, uPVC sliding doors cost about Rs 500 to Rs 900 per sq ft installed in Bangalore, including toughened glass and standard hardware. Casement and French doors cost Rs 650 to Rs 1,100 per sq ft. Lift and slide and folding systems cost Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,800 per sq ft. A standard 7 by 7-foot balcony sliding door costs roughly Rs 24,000 to Rs 44,000. Solid uPVC bathroom doors cost Rs 6,000 to Rs 14,000 each with the frame.
Mosquito mesh and ventilation
Bangalore homes need mosquito protection on doors that stay open in the evenings. uPVC sliding systems can take a third track for a sliding mesh shutter, and casement doors can take a pleated or hinged mesh door outside.
Plan this when ordering the door. Adding a mesh to a two-track sliding door later usually means a separate frame that looks added on.
For bathroom doors, a small louvered panel or an undercut at the bottom helps ventilation when the exhaust fan is running.
Noise and heat
A uPVC balcony door with good gaskets and laminated or double glass makes a real difference in rooms facing a main road or a metro line. In west-facing living rooms, solar control glass reduces the heat that comes through a large glass door in the afternoon.
Installation and maintenance
Install after plastering and before final painting, so the frames are not damaged.
Seal the gap between the frame and the wall with silicone outside, and make sure the sill slopes away from the door.
Clean the tracks and drainage slots of sliding doors regularly so water does not collect. Lubricate rollers and locks with a silicone spray once a year, and check the gaskets for gaps or hardening. Most uPVC suppliers offer a service visit after the first monsoon to adjust sashes that have settled, which is worth asking for when you order.
